We use Microsoft Silverlight company-wide. The product is necessary for our UPS shipping portal. With multiple locations and 200+ remote users, UPS is critical to getting company equipment to where it needs to go and we couldn't print our labels or use the portal without Microsoft Silverlight.
  • Silverlight interprets XAML directly
  • Take your .NET code cross-platform
  • Third-party component vendors are already well on with Silverlight add-ons
  • No support for the popular H.264 video codec
  • Another effort to promote proprietary technology rather than open standards
  • Silverlight is a browser-only solution
The Silverlight plug-in means developers can target a single, consistent runtime for browser-based apps, rather than working with the complexity of multiple browsers in different versions. You also get video and multimedia effects that are hard or impossible with pure HTML and JavaScript, though Adobe Systems' Flash has the same advantages.
  • Allows us to print shipping labels with ease, saving time and money!
  • Allows users to navigate the UPS shipping campus.
  • Due to shipping restrictions in some areas, having options available to ship, made possible by Silverlight, is crucial!
Microsoft Silverlight allows more adaptability and it integrates well with our products across the company. Adobe Flash crashes or doesn't work with our shipping campus.

We currently use Microsoft Silverlight for our Mediasite website. Mediasite is an online portal to upload recorded lectures for medical students. It enhances video playback and optimizes the streaming which was a very problematic issue with our previous software. Currently it is only used on campus and within the medical school and not clinical sites.
  • Reliable
  • Dependable
  • Innovative
  • Creative
  • Sometimes crashes
  • Video recording functionality would be ideal
The most important question to ask about is compatibility. First you must ensure that it works well with your current operating software and hardware especially crossover to Mac systems. Secondly, it works best for content housed on internal servers as opposed to off a remote server which requires connectivity which can be an issue
  • Increased lecture delivery
  • Improved academic experience
  • Less A/V tech support and delay
